Benurestat is a reversible competitive inhibitor of gut bacterial urease, inhibits ammonia production by urease-encoding gut bacteria, inhibits urease activity in mouse fecal suspensions ex vivo with IC50 of 2.5 uM.
Benurestat inhibits saw ammonia production in cultured P. mirabilis with IC50 of 69.9 uM.
Benurestat treatment reduces fecal and serum ammonia levels in mice, also rescues mice from otherwise lethal acute liver injury.
